Maison book girl is an idol group cut from a different cloth. Unlike most idol groups they don't dress up like crimefighting rejects from an episode of Sailor Moon. Being in their twenties they're older than members of most idol groups eg Babymetal (12-14 yo when first formed) and sora tob sakana (14 yo). However, what sets Maison book girl apart from all other idol groups is the music created by producer and mastermind Sakurai Kenta.
In general, idol music is incredibly cutesy, frenetically upbeat and over the top; whereas book girl's music is mature, sophisticated, melancholic and understated in comparison. Although not as overtly math rock as sora tob sakana, a trademark of book girl's music is the frequent use of odd time signatures. Terms informally thrown around to describe book girl's music include math-pop, math-idol and post-Perfume (LOL).
Maison book girl are comfortable performing with typical idol groups but they also embrace the underground music scene routinely performing with bands such as skillkills, CHAOTIC SPEED KING, and Taigen Kawabe of Bo Ningen. They were also the opening act for US shoegaze band Ringo Deathstarr for their shows in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Book girl are easily the classiest of the idol groups with a coolness and style that is much closer to Perfume than the grandiose tackiness of AKB48 and Momoiro Clover Z. There are a number of underground 'anti-idol' groups aiming to stand out by blending idol music with skramz (Yukueshirezutsurezure); ska/bluegrass/emo/balkan beat/shoegaze (Hauptharmonie); and fake-ass-metal (Deep Girl; 偶想Drop); but Maison book girl is the only group to avoid the use of gimmicks and theatrics in favor of creating a unique style of music with next level flavor, high quality and depth that stands on its own.
